As mentioned in yesterday's news update, Upshot is hitting the west coast. And like good health-conscious consumers, the LA crowd is discovering that Upshot not only works better than the other energy drinks out there, but it's all-natural as well. The Ventura County Star interviewed Drinks That Work founder and president Brian Lovejoy on Sunday. Check it out (http://www.venturacountystar.com/news/2007/nov/18/drinks-with-a-kick/)
The company's energy drink line, Upshot, is true to its name. It's packaged in a 2.5-ounce bottle, and the company says it is 2.5 times stronger than canned energy sodas. The drinks use natural sources of caffeine, such as kola nut, guarana and green tea.
"Natural ingredients tend to work," Lovejoy said. "If they work, why go with something that's not natural?"
And industry experts are jumping on board the Upshot bandwagon:
In an increasingly competitive market, Upshot's small size is significant, said Steve Holtz, a senior editor at Convenience Store-Petroleum Magazine.
"While the energy drink category is seeing tremendous growth as a whole, beverage makers are realizing there are differing use occasions for their drinks," he wrote in an e-mail. "A 24-ounce can might be good for a long drive or social event. An 8-ounce can is best in a bar atmosphere. And these smaller, shot-sized beverages are about convenience: no bottle or can to carry around ... just a quick gulp and a burst of energy."
Lovejoy concludes by telling the Star more functional drinks are on the horizon:
"I'm looking forward to new products we can offer consumers ... that would be valuable additions to their daily health," he said.
